Digital images comprise millions of pixels. The different ways they are calibrated and stored are known as file formats. If Save As is selected, a drop-down menu containing 17 different formats to choose from is presented. Many of these formats are only used in design or reproduction.

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format)

This is a standard format allowing images to be viewed, changed, and saved in most imaging software programs. A “profile” is attached which holds the digital information required for accurate printing and enables the image, size, colors, and contrast to be recognized on another computer. When saving as a TIFF, a box opens asking which compression is required. Usually, None is selected. However, for e-mailing TIFFs, you can use ZIP or LZW formats that reserve the quality.

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)

JPEGs are compressed files that remove pixels to reduce the file size, making them quicker to send as e-mail attachments. The reduction in quality will be noticeable, though selecting Save for Web from the File Menu will produce files of excellent quality. Digital camera record files as JPEGs, that can converted to and saved later as TIFFs.

Photoshop (PSD)

A Photoshop document is similar to a TIFF and is the default setting in Photoshop when images are saved. These documents can also be opened in other computers, and any open layers will be kept intact, which is not possible with a TIFF.

RAW

Some digital cameras can shoot in the RAW format, which doesn’t remove any pixels and so does not compress the file. The files will be larger than JPEGs and require careful processing to get the best quality. Raw is the favored format for professionals, giving them total control over the digital processing in the same way that making a high quality photographic print in a conventional darkroom gets the best out of a negative. Image can be saved as Photoshop RAW, but this is only really necessary if you do not know which format the image may be opened in other computer.

File Menu

The File menu contains many important commands for opening and saving files as well as printing images and preparing photographs for use online. It also includes several other exciting features, such as creating web pages, browsing with Adobe Bridge, and making contact sheets.

Opening an Image

To open any image that recognizes by Photoshop, select Open or (Ctrl/Command O) The last 10 files saved in Photoshop can be found under Open Recent.

Saving an Image

Selecting Save from the File menu (Ctrl­_S) will save any changes made to file, updating it from the previous saved version. If you prefer to leave the original file intact, however, and create a new file with any manipulation and changes, then select Save As. Then assign a new file name to store it on your computer.

File Info

Before digital photography, when only prints could be sent to clients, magazines or any, it was sensible to attach a label to the back with details such as title, name of photographer, return address, and a copyright notice. With the presence of digital files, this is found under file info.

Browse

Photoshop had a very useful File Browser that was used to look at the contents of different folders of photographs. This command has now a separate program, Adobe Bridge, can be use to browse image.
